The Indigenous Research Level of Engagement Tool (IRLET) aims to provide guidance to researchers and grant review committees who are involved in or are new to Indigenous research with guidelines on how to ensure a project proposal is being planned and executed in an appropriate manner.

The IRLET Training Module offers guidance on a number of categories for researchers and reviewers to consider when shaping or reviewing a research project proposal. Categories that the IRLET encourages its users to consider are:

  • Partnership with Indigenous Stakeholder(s);
  • Knowledge into Practice;
  • Strengths-based Approaches;
  • Indigenous Knowledges and Ways of Knowing.

This training module teaches learners how to score each category on a continuum from 1 to 5.

Learning to use the IRLET is beneficial for grant review committees, faculty, researchers, patient partners, academics, students, and trainees.

The IRLET training module ensures that users of the IRLET are able to consistently score a project and evaluate whether an Indigenous research project is being conducted in a good way that will be beneficial to both the researcher and the Indigenous community partners and stakeholders.

Indigenous research has a history of being exploitative and tokenistic with Indigenous communities. The IRLET is based on the Tri-Council Policy Statement Chapter 9: Research Involving the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples of Canada, and ensures that this harmful research history is not being repeated, but rather is reciprocal and beneficial to all involved parties.

In Partnership With

Learning Outcomes

Learners will gain the knowledge, understanding, skills, abilities, attitude, and awareness to:

  • Recognize the history and context in which the IRLET was developed.

  • Use the criteria by which a project should be measured.

  • Demonstrate scoring a project to meet IRLET standards.

  • Relate important components of Indigenous research, such as the need to use both strengths-based and trauma-informed approaches.

TRC Calls to Action

Education #63 (iii and iv)

IRLET addresses this call through the sharing of best practices when doing research with Indigenous communities through the encouragement of building capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect. It also addresses teacher training and researcher needs relating to these concepts. As well, Addressing the Legacy - Health Calls to Action #18-24 are considered which informs the learner about the need for these Calls in health-related research.

Was surprised at how quickly I went through the material. I like how it helped me with a project I am presently working on. The content of this module was applicable to what I needed support with.

Really Useful to Improve Researcher

Bansari Chavda

This is a really useful course to support research projects and someone who is evaluating proposals. It gives clear guidance by using scoring a method to evaluate proposals without bias.

This introductory course was very informative. I loved the structure of the delivery. I think any non-Indigenous policy analysts, regulators, or researchers should take this!
